The Good Doctor is a heartwarming medical series following the career and personal life of Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore). As someone with autism and savant syndrome, Shaun struggles in social situations but fans of the ABC series have seen him come on leaps and bounds since the beginning. Some of the biggest challenges he had to overcome were in the latest season of The Good Doctor.

Season four began with Shaun and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) coping with being apart because of the coronavirus pandemic.
This was particularly difficult as it was still early days for their relationship but they managed to get through it.
Then they were excited at the prospect of becoming parents as Lea found out she was pregnant.
The couple was left devastated though when she had a miscarriage, five months into the pregnancy.

The last few episodes of series four revolved around how Shaun and Lea were coping with their loss.
While it was difficult at times, they continued to grieve together which made them stronger.
So in the season finale, Lea popped the question and asked Shaun to marry her.
He, of course, said yes and was delighted to call friend Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) to tell her the news.
When will The Good Doctor return?
Back in May, ABC renewed The Good Doctor for another season to pull at viewers' heartstrings.
There has been some concern regarding when it would return given the fact series four was delayed thanks to Covid-19 shutting down production.
The previous series had started in September but season four didn't premiere until November last year.
But fear not as this will not be the case this time around with a release date already confirmed.

The Good Doctor season five will begin on Monday, September 27, at 10pm ET on ABC.
So far, the network hasn't announced how many episodes are going to make up the new series.
However, if the past two series are anything to go by, there could be 20 new episodes on the way.
Plenty of loved-up scenes are expected when the show does return though.

As Lea proposed to Shaun, fans are expecting their wedding to feature in season five.
Meanwhile, Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) and Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) confessed their love for one another in the series four finale.
So series five is shaping up to potentially be one of the most heartwarming yet.
