MIKE BUSHELL has taken part in a new internet challenge to raise awareness for Motor neurone disease, but failed to nominate BBC Breakfast colleague Carol Kirkwood, joking that her "toe insurance" was too expensive.

Mike Bushell takes part in Ice Foot Challenge

BBC Breakfast star Mike Bushell apologised to his co-worker Matt Taylor on Twitter last night, after nominating him to take part in the ice foot 92 challenge. Earlier in the day, the sport presenter completed the challenge, which sees participants stand in a bucket of ice for over a minute.

Mike, who was nominated by Sally Nugent, said he would have selected weather presenter Carol Kirkwood but instead opted for her co-star.

He joked that Carol’s “toe insurance was too much”.

Yesterday, Mike filmed himself standing in a bucket of ice and posted the footage on Twitter in view of his 60,000 followers.

He explained more about the challenge which is sweeping social media.

Mike admitted that he tried to talk through the pain when he captioned the video.

The 55-year-old wrote: “It’s time for my #icefoot92 challenge thanks to @sallynugent for the nomination.

“Tried to talk my way through it before nominating @MetMattTaylor good luck Matt.

“Supporting efforts of @LJohnrose @mndassoc @Rob7Burrow raising awareness of #MND.”

In the video he told viewers: “I’ve just put lots of ice in my bucket ready to take part in the ice foot 92 challenge thanks to my wonderful friend and colleague Sally Nugent for the nomination. I might not be thanking you in 92 seconds time.

“The ice foot 92 challenge was the idea of former professional footballer Len Johnrose and it’s all about raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Mike’s explanation was then interrupted as the pain increased.

“Now it really kicks in the pain,” he grimaced.

He went on to add: “So he wants the 92 football clubs across England and Wales to get involved across the leagues and take part in this challenge. He used it to get over foot injuries.

“He was diagnosed himself with Motor neurone disease in 2017 and has been doing a lot to raise awareness about the research that needs to be done and the money that needs to be raised,” Mike continued.

After learning that he was to do it next, Matt re-tweeted his post.

“WELL DONE @mikebreakfast for the achievement ...rather than the nomination,” he wrote online.

“At least I've organised some sun for when I attempt. May have to use tonight's frost to condition my feet though #MND,” the weatherman joked.

Mike replied: “Aw good luck Matt and don’t turn too blue.

“Yes sunshine will help.

“Apologies for picking you and not @carolkirkwood but Carol’s toe insurance is just too much.”
