All Creatures Great And Small saw a successful run on earlier in 2020, and the series is the latest adaptation of the real-life story of Yorkshire vet - James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph). The first season went down a hit with fans, who appreciated the family-friendly fresh take on an iconic story, and the series has now made it onto DVD. Actor Ralph spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the show's future, and what fans can expect.

How many seasons of ACGAS will there be?

All Creatures Great And Small is a much-loved story by an esteemed vet, Alf Wight, who used the pen-name James Herriot when he documented his experiences.

There have been a number of TV adaptations over the years, but the 2020 adaptation has proven to be one of the most successful with audiences.

The series sees Herriot get himself accustomed to rural life, and he faces all the trials and tribulations of trying to make a good impression in front of his new eccentric boss - Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West).

There has already been news of a Christmas Special, which will air at some point over the festive period, but fans are eager to find out more about future episodes.

Ralph told Express.co.uk he and the rest of the cast were eager to reprise their roles for many years to come.

He said: "We will have to see what happens, everyone is saying we would love to do more, certainly a season two and more.

"Channel 5 is saying the same thing, it's been incredible across the board. It took me by surprise, I had a lot of faith in the show but still to receive that very positive response was just a joy. I absolutely love it."

The role of James Herriot was Ralph's breakthrough role, and fans have praised the star for his compelling performance.

Throughout the series he was tasked with performing all sorts of tricky procedures on sick animals, and Ralph explained he was keen to get involved as much as he could.

He said: "With regards to everything like surgery, I kind of said from the off I wanted to do as much as possible.

"I wanted to get up close and personal. We had a brilliant time making it and hopefully that comes across on screen."

Fans will certainly agree the series was most welcome during such a turbulent time, and viewers were grateful of the escape.

In September 2020 Channel 5 revealed ACGAS was the network's biggest show in the past five years, and the premiere was watched by more than three million people.

Starring alongside Ralph in the first season was Rachel Shenton as Helen Alderson and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon.

Herriot started to develop strong feelings for Helen, and she too had feelings for him, even though she was engaged to someone else.

In the final episode Herriot was heartbroken when he found out his chances with Helen had been shattered.

Fans are keen to know if he will get another opportunity to reveal his feelings for her, as the real-life story sees the couple get married and have children together.

Hopefully the series will be renewed for a second season, which will address the ups and downs of the relationship between the two characters.

The series is due to make its debut in the US in January 2021, and viewers are already looking forward to finding out more about the story.

One critic said: "My absolute favourite new show: All Creatures Great and Small, heading to the U.S. on Jan 10, which feels like the warm, cozy country vet show we all desperately need right now.

"Seven episodes of breathtaking views of the Dales, complicated relationships, and animals. Pure bliss."

The series has been described as "comfort TV", which has been much-needed during such a difficult year for all.

Another fan said: "Really enjoyed the new All Creatures Great and Small, including the welcome return of the legendary Tricki Woo; great family watch."

Sadly the cast and crew had to say goodbye to Tricki Woo's owner, Mrs Pumphrey, who was played by Dame Diana Rigg. The star died on September 10, 2020, having battled with cancer since March.

The DVD release of the series is a fitting tribute to the star, and it is proof of how successful the latest adaptation has been.
