Jessica Mulroney, the Canadian stylist, known often as best friend and fashion consultant to Meghan Markle, has apologised after she was accused of exhibiting 'textbook white privilege behaviour'.
The claims came from Canadian fashion blogger Sasha Exeter, who shared a 12-minute long video entitled, 'My "Amy Cooper" Experience' - referring to a viral video of a white woman calling the police on a Black man in Central Park, New York - where she said she had tried to encourage her peers to be vocal on Black Lives Matter issues on Instagram.
Exeter claims Mulroney 'took offence' by Exeter's 'generic' call-to-action for her fellow bloggers.
'What happened next was a series of very problematic behaviour and antics,' claims Exeter. '... that ultimately responded in her sending me a threat in writing.'
'I'm by no means calling Jess a racist but what I will say is this: She is very well aware of her wealth, perceived power and privilege because of the colour of her skin and that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing. Textbook white privilege really, in my personal opinion.'
Exeter said she found the response 'strange' considering Mulroney's previous activism and also considering that 'her best friend is arguably one of the most famous Black women in the world', referring to the Duchess of Sussex.
Exeter accused Mulroney, who is married to Ben the son of the former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, of ticking every box of 'what a white woman should absolutely not do during the biggest racial uproar in history'.
'She made herself the victim and, of course, me the villain,' said Exeter.
The situation has snowballed somewhat since Exeter's video, with Mulroney's TV show I Do, Re Do, being cancelled by CTV, with the national network saying 'Recent conduct by one of our shows' hosts, Jessica Mulroney, conflicts with our commitment to diversity and equality,' according to the Daily Mail.
Mulroney, whose three children were bridesmaids and page boys at the 2018 royal wedding, has since apologised to Exeter in a comment on the blogger's video and her own statement shared to her Instagram account.
'She rightfully called me out for not doing enough when it came to engaging in the important conversation around race and injustice in our society. I took it personally and that was wrong. I know I need to do better,' the stylist wrote.
She then announced she'd be stepping back from social media temporarily to allow for Black voices to take over her account.
