“At one point in their history, when they had financial troubles, they were selling off I think it was square metres of the pitch.

“Paul bought the middle square where the kick off was.

“He got loads of publicity, saying, ‘Right well I can say to them, they can’t kick off from my square’.”

Back in 1992, A Save The Rovers campaign had been set up to raise £200,000 to help save the club.

Paul later hit the headlines after he bought 10 square yards around the centre of the pitch.

An article published in The Doncaster Star at the time had the headline: "Rovers opt for a bit of magic.”

It added: “A little bit of magic and a touch of divine intervention are the latest ideas to help save cash-starved Doncaster Rovers.”

Sharing further details, they revealed Paul had agreed to pledge £25 to sponsor a square yard of the Belle Vue turf to help with the funding.

Debbie is no stranger to discussing memories about her late husband on her show.

Last month, she told listeners how her husband was the reason why she has been referred to as "the lovely Debbie McGee" throughout her career.

She began: “I’m going to tell you how I got the title of the lovely Debbie McGee.

“It wasn’t really, I don’t think it's to do with me being lovely, it was the very first series I ever did for the BBC with Paul Daniels.

“And the first episode I was involved in, my introduction was Paul saying, ‘And here is the lovely Debbie McGee’ and it just stuck.

“He used it every time he introduced me, so other people picked up on it.

“Who would have thought people would still be calling me it? It’s a nice title to have.”

The magician died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour aged 77 in 2016.
