Is sunbathing in public allowed during lockdown?

Until May 13, lockdown rules prevented Brits from sunbathing in public spaces.

The ban has now been lifted under new Government guidelines which hope to get the nation back to normal.

The latest rules state Brits can soak up the sun in parks and beaches, so long as they comply with social distancing rules.

It means sunbathers must keep two metres apart from others at all times.

Those wanting to enjoy the summer sun with a friend are allowed to meet up with one other person from a different household outside - but they must keep two metres apart.

The new guidelines say:

  • Stay at home as much as possible
  • Work from home if you can
  • Limit contact with other people
  • Keep your distance if you go out (two metres apart where possible)
  • Wash your hands regularly

What has the Government said about sunbathing?

Outlining the new rules, Boris Johnson said: "You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household."

But he warned: "You must obey the rules on social distancing and to enforce those rules we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them."

Anyone repeatedly flouting the rules could be slapped with fines of up to £3,200, while first time offenders could have to fork out £100 - nearly double the previous penalty.

Am I allowed to visit parks?

Yes, most parks are still open but playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment is closed to stop the spread of the virus.

You can now enjoy unlimited exercise and picnics in parks as long as you are abiding by social distancing rules.

You should only exercise or picnic with members of your own household, or, keep two metres apart from one other person from another household.

Many parks have been closed during the lockdown so it is best to check with your local council if your park is open.

Brockwell Park was the latest to close from April 6, 2020 after 3,000 people descended on the green space last weekend.

Hammersmith and Fulham council closed all parks in the borough from March 22.

Can I be fined for sunbathing?

Yes, police have the power to enforce social distancing rules by issuing fines and dispersing gatherings of people in public places.

Fines for flouting the rules have now increased in England with the new rules, meaning anyone repeatedly flouting the rules could be slapped with fines of up to £3,200.

First time offenders could have to fork out £100 - nearly double the previous penalty of £60.
