SINGAPORE — A woman who was previously accused of culpable homicide over the death of her former boyfriend has had her charge downgraded to aiding him to commit suicide and obstructing justice. Alverna Cher, 39, was charged in the State Courts on Tuesday with facilitating 32-year-old Wee Jun Xiang’s commission of suicide through nitrogen gas inhalation at 145A Bedok Reservoir Road on 16 May last year. Cher is accused of turning the valve of a tank of nitrogen gas four to five times, helping Wee to put the tank in a lying position, and positioning the tank to pour the nitrogen gas into an IKEA bag.
The Singaporean, who is the director of funeral services firm City Funeral Singapore, is represented by pro-bono lawyers Josephus Tan, Cory Wong and Josiah Zee.Cher also faces a maximum seven-year jail term or a fine or both if found guilty of obstructing justice.
