REUTERS: Wall Street's main indexes were set to open lower on Thursday, as top negotiators from the United States and China meet for the first time since late July to try to hammer out a deal to end the 15-month long trade war.

Further denting sentiment, the South China Morning Post reported the United States and China made no progress in deputy-level trade talks earlier in the week. Equity markets have also been rankled by weak economic indicators showing a sharp contraction in U.S. manufacturing and a bleak reading on business activity, bolstering bets of another interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve to combat a slowdown.Traders currently see an 85per cent chance of the central bank lowering borrowing costs at its policy meeting in October, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.

Apple Inc inched 0.3per cent higher in premarket trading after Longbow Research upgraded the company to"buy", citing higher iPhone 11 demand.
