sg/wAjt WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Tuesday (Jan 25) warned Belarus that its authoritarian government will also face reprisals if it assists ally Russia in invading neighbouring Ukraine. "We've also made clear to Belarus that if it allows its territory to be used for an attack on Ukraine, it would face a swift and decisive response from the United States and our allies and partners," State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters. Speaking to reporters on a call, the officials did not name the specific countries or companies they were in talks with to ensure an uninterrupted energy flow into Europe for the remainder of the winter, but said they included a broad range of suppliers, including sellers of liquefied natural gas (LNG). "If an invasion were to proceed from Belarus, if Russian troops were to permanently station on their territory, Nato could well have to reassess our own force posture in the countries that border Belarus," Price said. The remaining personnel would be part of a specific US response to the deepening crisis, Defence Department officials said, most likely to provide assurance to US allies in Eastern Europe that are fearful that Russia's plans for Ukraine could extend to the Baltics and other countries in Nato's so-called eastern flank. The longtime strongman of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has put down mass protests that question the legitimacy of his election. "We've been working to identify additional volumes of non- Russian natural gas from various areas of the world; from North Africa and the Middle East to Asia and the United States," a senior administration official said on condition of anonymity. Lukashenko last month announced that Russia will conduct military exercises with Belarus, leading the United States to warn that nuclear weapons could enter the country. The United States has committed more than US$650 million of security assistance to Ukraine in the past year and more than US$2.

The move comes as leading to Western warnings against an invasion of the Western-oriented country.." Mr Kirby's announcement comes after The New York Times reported Sunday that President Joe Biden was considering the deployment of several thousand US troops, as well as warships and aircraft, to Nato allies in the Baltics and Eastern Europe.
