WASHINGTON: US senators sought on Tuesday to declare that China is committing genocide against Uighurs and other Turkic-speaking Muslims, a step that could ramp up pressure on behalf of the estimated one million-plus people in camps.
Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, said the resolution would show that the United States"can't stay silent." Robert O'Brien, Trump's national security advisor, said earlier this month that"if not genocide, something close" to it is taking place in Xinjiang. George W Bush's administration described Sudan's scorched-earth campaign in Darfur as genocide, while Barack Obama's administration said likewise about the Islamic State extremist group's mass killings, rape and enslavement of Christians, Yazidis and other religious minorities.
"Obviously it would be great to have the executive branch say that this is genocide and/or crimes against humanity," Enos said.
