BANGKOK: Thailand's parliament approved on Sunday a near-US$60 billion stimulus package, the kingdom's biggest-ever cash injection, to revive an economy that has been hammered by the coronavirus.

The stimulus will also provide for a fund to stabilise markets and boost purchasing power, as well as US$1.4 billion for"healthcare readiness", the government said, without providing further details on how the money would be spent. But its tourism-reliant economy, choked by the halt in international travel, has taken a battering, and more than 20 million have already registered for a government cash handout of 5,000 baht .
