BURTON ON TRENT, England: England manager Gareth Southgate attempted to draw a line under the altercation between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez saying he took ultimate responsibility for the decision to drop Footballer of the Year Sterling.
Southgate had said in a statement on Monday that his decision had been backed by the"agreement of the entire squad". Several versions of the incident have appeared in the British media and Southgate sounded frustrated by the leaks. England fullback Ben Chilwell said that Sterling had apologised for his actions. Gomez was seen on the training ground with a large scratch on his face.
"Gareth has handled being England manager brilliantly - up to this point... However, I feel this incident could have been handled better. Keep it behind closed doors and deal with it internally surely?" Ferdinand wrote in a Facebook post.
