sg/w2Dw MOSCOW (AFP) - At least five people died following strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's separatist-controlled city of Donetsk, Russian investigators said on Monday (May 30), claiming "On May 30, Ukrainian security forces shelled the centre of the city of Donetsk.According to preliminary information, five civilians were killed, including a teenager born in 2009," Russia's Investigative Committee said as quoted by Russian news agencies.Ukraine’s train system has ferried arms and evacuated citizens through Lyman, a key railway hub in the east.It added 16 people were injured in the attack that damaged three schools.Diplomats and experts said closing the corridor at the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey would almost certainly force thousands of people to flee Syria.Donetsk is the de facto capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region that borders Russia.Ukrainian officials have sent mixed signals on Lyman.Before sending troops into Ukraine, Russia recognised the independence of the DNR and neighbouring Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), another pro-Russian breakaway region.ua website reported.

Kyiv has been locked in conflict with Kremlin-backed separatists in the two breakaway regions since 2014.Pavlo Kyrylenko said Russian troops controlled most of it and were trying to press their offensive toward Bakhmut, another city in the region.But the corridor already appears caught up in the fallout from the war in Ukraine and the competing interests of Russia and the United States.Authorities in the DNR said on Telegram that two apartment blocks and three schools were hit in the attack, accusing Kyiv of using artillery and rockets with cluster munitions.Remote video URL.In his Saturday video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation in the east as “very complicated’’ and said that the “Russian army is trying to squeeze at least some result’’ by focusing its efforts there.
