WHO experts say repeated boosters of original Covid-19 vaccines not a viable strategy

https://str.sg/wM6AGENEVA (AFP) - WHO experts warned on Tuesday (Jan 11) that repeating booster doses of the original Covid-19 vaccines is not a viable strategy against emerging variants and called for new jabs that better protect against transmission.

An expert group created by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to assess the performance of Covid-19 vaccines said simply providing fresh jabs of existing Covid-19 vaccines as new strains of the virus emerge was not the best way to fight the pandemic.

sg/wM6A GENEVA (AFP) - WHO experts warned on Tuesday (Jan 11) that repeating booster doses of the original Covid-19 vaccines is not a viable strategy against emerging variants and called for new jabs that better protect against transmission. An expert group created by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to assess the performance of Covid-19 vaccines said simply providing fresh jabs of existing Covid-19 vaccines as new strains of the virus emerge was not the best way to fight the pandemic. Chief executive Carrie Lam told reporters in a weekly media briefing that kindergartens and primary schools must stop face-to-face classes from Friday until after Chinese New Year at the beginning of February to prevent transmissions of the fast-spreading Omicron variant. “A vaccination strategy based on repeated booster doses of the original vaccine composition is unlikely to be appropriate or sustainable,” the WHO Technical Advisory Group on Covid-19 Vaccine Composition (TAG-Co-VAC) said in a statement. The relaxed visa rule is yet another attempt by Thailand to restart its travel industry as the emergence of the Omicron variant triggers a new wave of Covid infections. It said preliminary data indicated the existing vaccines were less effective at preventing symptomatic Covid-19 disease in people who have contracted the new Omicron variant, currently spreading like wildfire around the world. Children over five will be able to get the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine, Mrs Lam said. But protection against severe disease, which is what the jabs were especially intended to do, “is more likely to be preserved”. The United States is facing a surge in infections caused by the highly contagious Omicron variant and on Monday had 132,646 people hospitalised with Covid, surpassing the record of 132,051 set in January 2021.

It recommended developing vaccines that not only protect people against falling seriously ill but could also better prevent infection and transmission in the first place. "I am optimistic and confident we can overcome the situation," Mrs Lam said. "The suspension came during the peak travel season so the impact on the sector is quite significant. “Covid-19 vaccines that have high impact on prevention of infection and transmission, in addition to the prevention of severe disease and death, are needed and should be developed,” TAG-Co-VAC said. “Until such vaccines are available, and as the Sars-CoV-2 virus evolves, the composition of current Covid-19 vaccines may need to be updated, to ensure that (they) continue to provide WHO-recommended levels of protection against infection and disease by VOCs (variants of concern), including Omicron and future variants. The ban will not apply to diplomats, government officials, athletes and staff participating in the Winter Olympics, which open on Feb 4 in Beijing, according to the report.” Remote video URL . "The emergence of new variants and subsequent border controls, both in Thailand and elsewhere, poses a risk" to Thailand's tourist arrival estimates and growth, Ms Juliana Lee, an economist with Deutsche Bank AG, said in a report Monday.
