Public relations associate Tessa Lee, 25, bought a Nintendo Switch portable video game console two months ago, largely to play the popular Switch game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which had yet to launch then.

She also uses the chat app in the games to keep in contact with her cousins in Kuala Lumpur."During our gaming sessions, we create a channel to talk to one another. We often check on how one another is doing, get an update and catch up, since we are not able to see one another any time soon," she says.

Qisahn owner Soon Qishan says:"Quite a number of customers told us they have decided to buy games and stay home to play due to the Covid-19 outbreak." Consumer marketplace Carousell is seeing a 25 per cent increase in searches for gaming items, with the Switch being especially popular. Online retailer Lazada saw an"unusually huge rise in the sales of games" in Singapore last month. In particular, sales of console games and gaming chairs jumped by 200 per cent and 130 per cent respectively, from the period of Feb 23 to March 7 to the following two-week period.

A Microsoft spokesman told The Straits Times:"These are unprecedented times and we are taking proactive steps to plan for these high-usage periods."
