SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft has won a Pentagon contract for augmented reality headgear for soldiers worth US$21.88 billion over the next decade, the company and the United States military announced on Wednesday .

Microsoft will rapidly start producing the so-called Integrated Augmentation System under the contract. A head-mounted display used by soldiers for battle and training employs sensors for night and thermal vision in addition to providing data for help in engaging targets and making tactical decisions, officials said."The program delivers enhanced situational awareness, enabling information sharing and decision-making in a variety of scenarios," Kipman said in a blog post.

Microsoft wins $21.9 billion contract with U.S. Army to supply augmented reality headsets(Reuters) -Microsoft Corp on Wednesday said it has won a deal to sell the U.S. Army augmented reality headsets based on its HoloLens product and backed by Azure cloud computing services. The contract could be worth up to $21.88 billion over 10 years, a Microsoft spokesman told Reuters. Over the past two years, Microsoft has worked with the Army to on the prototyping phase of what is called the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, or IVAS.
