Agatha made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on Monday afternoon, touching down with winds of 169kmh near the beach town of Puerto Angel on the Pacific coast before losing strength as it moved inland.By early Tuesday, Agatha had weakened to a tropical depression and is expected to dissipate by afternoon, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), which warned of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in Oaxaca state.High sea temperatures and the hurricane's slow speed could give it plenty of time to strengthen before it roars ashore, Alejandra Mendez, general coordinator of Mexico's National Weather Service (SMN), said in a videoconference.Rain caused mud and rocks to slide into two highways in Oaxaca, blocking access to at least one area of the state, local authorities said.Agatha is not expected to alter in strength much before reaching land this afternoon, the centre noted.Mexico's transportation ministry was working to clear the roads into the night on Monday."It is forecast that the hurricane will probably make landfall as a Category Three between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, Oaxaca," said Mendez, adding that she expected landfall on Monday. Some towns in Oaxaca lost power, and one transformer exploded, officials said.Trade Representative (USTR) earlier this month marked the third U.

Telephone lines were knocked out on Monday, forcing authorities to communicate by radio. The NHC said the storm was “expected to bring an extremely dangerous storm surge and life-threatening winds to southern Mexico on Monday”.A hurricane warning is in effect from the port of Salina Cruz to Lagunas de Chacahua, the Miami-based NHC said.Agatha, the strongest hurricane on record to reach land on Mexico's Pacific coast during the month of May, is expected to drop a total of 25cm to 41cm of rain on Oaxaca, with heavy downpours in nearby states of Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco and eastern Guerrero, the NHC said.Source: Reuters/vc.They also closed the ports of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
