M'sia's partial chicken ban: Butchers, hawkers hope for aid after slaughterhouses get foreign worker levy waiver

, are seeking government support, following the waiver of the foreign worker levy for chicken slaughterhouses.

Butcher Chua Lian Heng, owner of Lian Heng Poultry Supply at Taman Jurong Market, told TODAY that while the relatively larger slaughterhouses are beneficiaries of the support, smaller businesses like his have been left to fend for themselves. "We can sell it but the profit won't be much, the chicken is too expensive and there are too few people who would want to buy it."

Even so, his stall had lost about 60 to 70 per cent in revenue this month, and he too hopes that there will be some financial help from the authorities. "If we can get by with the little we have, whether the Government gives us support or not, it will be fine," he said."We cannot always rely on the Government for everything."

While he could not provide any figures, he said that business had decreased substantially, and that he and his workers are"just doing what we can do to get by".The poultry slaughterhouses are glad that they have been given some much-needed support, but also note that other firms along the supply chain are still in need of aid.
