PARIS - France's President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Sunday for an end to Turkey's offensive against Kurds in northern Syria, warning of dire humanitarian consequences and a boost for the Islamic State group.

"There are humanitarian reasons for this," Merkel told journalists, adding:"We can no longer accept this situation against the Kurds. Another solution must absolutely be found." Macron will also hold an emergency defence cabinet meeting on Sunday to discuss options regarding the Turkish offensive in northeastern Syria, the French presidency said in a statement.
