For his offence, Lal Chan, a Bangladeshi, was sentenced by a district court on Tuesday to two months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to a single charge of voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Ahmed Rabbi.
DPP Poh said Lal Chan was unhappy that Mr Rabbi had placed only his own clothes into the washing machine when the younger man could have collated all the dirty clothing from their roommates. Those words, said the prosecutor, had “especially agitated” Lal Chan as his mother had passed away about six months before the altercation. Two days later, on Dec 1, Lal Chan entered the dormitory’s kitchen area close to midnight where Mr Rabbi was washing cashew nuts in preparation for his meal the following day.
The argument escalated when Lal Chan picked up a stone pestle — a makeshift door stopper that weighed close to half a kilogramme — while Mr Rabbi armed himself with a knife.
