NEW DELHI - India's aid to the Maldives to build a US$500 million bridge connecting four islands will further increase its visibility and rival a friendship bridge built by China amid a jostle for influence in the island nation.
At Gulhifalhu, India is additionally involved in constructing a port through a line of credit, said the Ministry of External Affairs. The announcement of the Indian bridge comes two years after China garnered much attention for building the US$200 million China-Maldives Friendship Bridge linking Male to Hulhule, the airport island.
Current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, since coming to power in 2018, has restored the Maldives' traditional close relationship with India. The country, which depends heavily on tourism, saw some 280,000 out of 1.7 million tourists last year from China.
