A Facebook user Feroz Nadia, alarmed by the fire in Bedok North which claimed three lives, said a family which clutters the common area in Blk 544 Jurong West Street 42 was risking the lives of every one who lived in that HDB block. She shared two photos of of her reports to the Jurong Town Council.
The toddler and mother, 34, and a man, 35 – who live in the unit in Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2 – were taken to hospital unconscious. The man and the toddler died from their injuries at the hospital, the police said. The mother is still in critical but stable condition. Another occupant, a 56-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nadia said that “hundreds of calls and reports from residents to the Town council” about the hoardings in the common corridor were in vain. She said that the reason for most fires, that it is caused by clutter and hoardings in the flat and in the common corridors, are mostly left unreported by the media.
