- Hospitals appear to be treating Medicare patients in emergency departments and observation areas to avoid readmissions and the financial penalties associated with them, according to a new U.S. study.
This increase was a result of a rise in treat-and-discharge visits to an emergency department and an increase in observation stays . Actual readmissions, though, decreased by 23 visits per month per 100,000 patient discharges during this period. "Our study suggests that health care systems are intensifying efforts to treat patients who come back to a hospital in ERs and as observation stays, potentially to make their readmission rates look lower," he told Reuters Health in an email.
