SINGAPORE: Polls closed on Friday in Singapore’s 13th General Election after voting hours were extended by two hours.
Polls were initially scheduled to close at 8pm, but following long queues at a"small number" of polling stations in the evening, the Elections Department pushed back the closing time to 10pm"to ensure that all voters who had turned up would be able to cast their vote".As of 8pm, 96 per cent of registered voters - 2,565,000 people - cast their ballots in Singapore, a figure higher than the turnout in 2015, which was was 2,304,331, according ELD.
Voting kicked off at 8am, with a special time-band set aside for senior voters aged 65 and above at most polling stations.earlier on Friday at several polling centres across Singapore, with queues snaking outside several polling stations. Some seniors in the queue were given chairs to sit on while waiting.
ELD apologised to voters on Friday afternoon and said that it had done away with the requirement to wear disposable gloves at polling stations, as this contributed to long waiting times.Watch CNA's GE2020 results special:
