SINGAPORE - Some social media users were cheated of at least $107,000 from January to August this year, the police said on Thursday .
Scammers contacted the victims on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, impersonating the victims' friends or followers. The police advised members of the public to protect themselves from these scams by being wary of unusual requests from strangers and their social media contacts. "Always verify the authenticity of the request by contacting your friend, but do not do so through the social media platform as the account might have been taken over by scammers," said the police.
