The viruses, described in a preprint paper released last Friday, are more distantly related to the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 than several other known viruses, the researchers said, but have high levels of similarity across certain areas of the genome.
China‘s foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a regular briefing on Monday that the report was “totally inconsistent with the facts”. How the investigation into the origins of the virus should continue is likely to be up for discussion at the meeting of the WHO’s 194 member countries this week.
