BEIJING: China warned Wednesday that a"price must be paid" after the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation seeking sanctions against senior Chinese officials over the crackdown on mainly Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang.

The legislation condemns Beijing's"gross human rights violations" linked to the crackdown in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, where upwards of one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim minorities are believed to be held in re-education camps. "Today the human dignity and human rights of the Uighur community are under threat from Beijing's barbarous actions, which are an outrage to the collective conscience of the world," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told her colleagues shortly before the vote.

In an earlier statement, Hua said the bill"wantonly smears China's efforts to eliminate extremism and combat terrorism" in Xinjiang.

Trump says new US law on Hong Kong doesn't help China trade talksU.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday U.S. legislation backing protesters in Hong Kong did not make trade negotiations with China easier, but ... viriyabot Or he could just say the obvious, it hurts trade talks. I wonder when he said that because just yesterday I penned a tweet on that very subject pointing out mainly that those saying it’s not tied to trade, doesn’t effect trade talks is misguided, China won’t forget about that.
