INDIANAPOLIS : With COVID-19 restrictions in the rear-view mirror, an expected crowd of more than 300,000 was looking forward to a return to the Indianapolis 500 glory days on Sunday, as Helio Castroneves set out to become the first five-times winner.
That will not be the case on a sizzling Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with officials saying the race would pull in the largest crowd in the last 20 years with the exception of the 100th running in 2016. The huge crowd, combined with recent mass shootings in South Texas and Buffalo, has heightened unease around the race, the concern reflected in the presence of 1,100 law enforcement officers on the grounds.
Nobody is more excited to see the fans back in force than Roger Penske, who completed his purchase of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar Series in 2019, just before COVID-19 shutdown global sport.
