Bitcoin tumbles as coronavirus variant sees riskier assets dumped

LONDON :Bitcoin tumbled almost 8per cent on Friday after the discovery of a new, potentially vaccine-resistant coronavirus variant saw investors dump riskier assets for the perceived safety of bonds, the yen and the dollar.

It was on track for its biggest one-day drop since Sept. 20, and has slumped by more than a fifth since hitting a record high of almost US$70,000 earlier this month. "The spread of , especially to other countries, could wither investor appetite further," said Yuya Hasegawa at Tokyo-based exchange Bitbank."BTC's upside will likely be limited and the market should brace for further loss."

Britain says new COVID-19 variant is the most significant yet foundLONDON (Reuters) -Britain said on Friday that a newly identified coronavirus variant spreading in South Africa was considered by scientists to be the most significant one yet found and so it needed to ascertain whether or not it made vaccines ineffective. Defending a ban on flights from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the lesson of COVID was that early action was essential. The UK Health Security Agency said that the variant - called B.1.1.529 - has a spike protein that was dramatically different to the one in the original coronavirus that COVID-19 vaccines are based on.
