BEIJING - His style may be less combative than the defeated Mr Donald Trump, but experts say a Joe Biden presidency will tighten Washington's squeeze on big power rival China over trade, human rights and security.
"With Biden, I think we'll see a more considered approach that's smarter, that's more targeted... that doesn't focus on aggression alone, but considers long-term competition." A Biden presidency will be primed to"deter aggression" by China, said Mr Anthony Blinken, a long-time adviser to the president-elect, during the campaign.
The Biden presidential campaign has also referred to the crackdown on the Muslim Uighur minority in China's Xinjiang as a"genocide", provocative language to Beijing with potential ramifications under international law. Inside China, where the virus first emerged and research on a vaccine is making progress, that signals a chance for rapprochement.
Biden’s support for the UK during the 1982 Falklands War, in the face of an invasion by a murderous dictatorship, was much appreciated. The Falklands having been British since 1765. If ever he needs a bolt-hole ;-)
