BEIJING: China's vast region of Xinjiang has hit the headlines as a centre of massive alleged human rights abuses, but Beijing is keen it gets recognition for another reason - as a top winter sports destination. As host of this year's Beijing Winter Olympics, China's Communist leadership has declared

The majority of Xinjiang's ski resorts are in ethnically diverse regions bordering Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Rights advocates worry China is spotlighting minority athletes to whitewash abuses in the region, adding to propaganda efforts to portray Xinjiang as an attractive tourism destination. "The Chinese government has promoted tourism to Xinjiang, turning the region into a sort of Disneyland where inhabitants are stripped of their identity and opinion," said Maya Wang of Human Rights Watch. One local official told China Daily that Xinjiang offers tourism, winter sports and"folklore experiences".

Varant - who advised the local government on building ski resorts in Altay in 2019 - told AFP there has been"signs of success" in the region's ski industry, but it will remain"a niche market".

If not for the CNA Logo, I would have thought this was a typical anti-China opinion/commentary from the likes of CNN, REUTERS, BBC, AP.

No wonder CNA is labelled as western propaganda media. The article itself is contradictory. As a Singaporean, we are disappointed with CNA promoting western propaganda. Please do your own research and publish factual news.

Will Beijing promote Xinjiang as a winter sports paradise, to bring in millions of people to visit IF horrible things (as claimed by the west) are happening in Xinjiang? Is Beijing stupid? Or do they people to go to XJ to see for themselves?

Different fates of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and the Uyghur exiles living abroad. The former are sane and ordinary, the latter are a bunch of liars and murderers supported by the US government always on the verge of insanity and desperate.

Is there genocide in Xinjiang when the population increased more the 3 times in 7 decades. If so China is really lousy at genocide unlike the Anglo-American axis of evil countries.

The US lies about the Xinjiang Genocide allegations.
