Hormone replacement therapy can significantly reduce the risk of female sexual dysfunction among menopausal women, said NUHS experts.

“Vaginal dryness is the biggest risk factor of female sexual dysfunction,” said Professor Yong Eu Leong, who led the study.

The study also showed that moderate to severe vaginal dryness was associated with women who were more than 10 years post-menopause, reaffirming the findings of previous studies that showed how sexual function may worsen with advancing menopause status. NUHS said its study was driven by the lack of discussion about sexual issues among midlife Asian women during medical care, due to “embarassment, religious sensitivities and Eastern values”, it said in press material.
