Song Kang-Ho wins Best Actor in Cannes

30 May – Song Kang-Ho recently became the first South Korean actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.

The actor was recently honoured with the accolade for his performance in Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Broker", in which he plays an illegal baby broker in the movie about a Korean family looking for a home for an abandoned baby.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Song sang praises for the Japanese director, saying that Kore-eda understood Korean culture very much.

"I have seen almost all of Kore-eda's films so far. Many Korean fans love his films aside from me, due to the distinctive aesthetics of Japanese movies," said the actor, who became famous overseas via his 2019 movie, "Parasite".

Prior to this, it was Jeon Do-Yeon who was the first Korean actress to win at the said festival in 2007 via "Secret Sunshine", which also starred the said actor.

Aside from Song, South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook was also honoured with the Best Director accolade for his new movie, "Decision to Leave", which co-stars Tang Wei.
