Pablo Picasso Has Been Vaulted Into NFTs by His Heirs

The prominent artist of the 20th century Pablo Picasso has entered the non-fungible tokens (NFT) craze, with his descendants releasing tokens for a ceramic heirloom.

Picasso’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso, and her son Florian Picasso said in an interview that they are selling 1010 digital artworks of a ceramic art piece, about the size of a large bowl.

The unique NFT and the actual ceramic bowl will be auctioned on the British fine arts auction website – Sotheby’s – in March. A Picasso would mark the entry of a “Grand Master” into the NFT game, his scions told.

“We’re trying to build a bridge between the NFT world and the fine art world,” said Florian Picasso, the artist’s great-grandson.

The Picassos haven’t released a complete picture of the heirloom and are probably hiding to protect its identity before the rollout.

Currently, the picture of the art piece shows a portion of a large salad bowl with yellow paint lines and a dripping green stain with “58” written at the base. “It’s a work that represents a face, and it’s very expressive,” Marina said.

The ceramic piece is a cherished property, dating back to October 1958, recalls Marina Picasso, when she was a child. The work has never been seen publicly before.

“It’s joyful, happy. It represents life … It’s one of those objects that have been part of our life, our intimate lives — my life with my children.”

This isn’t the first time Picasso’s paintings are up for auction as NFTs. Sotheby’s in June 2021, used NFTs in a novel way to digitally secure a Picasso painting. The auction house placed Picasso’s real physical painting, together with specially crafted NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.

Arts and NFTs

Driven by a surge this year in the market for NFTs, Picasso’s digital works will bring not only epochal significance but also create a fad for a wider cryptocurrency push.

Florian Picasso said that such NFTs will honor the legendary artist. “I think it fits within Picasso’s legacies because we are paying tribute to him and his way of working, which was always being creative,” he added.

A part of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to charity, helping to overcome the shortage of nurses. Another portion of profits will be donated to an NGO that aims to reduce carbon emissions.

Florian, a DJ and a music composer, will add his touch to the Picasso NFTs with his unique music, along with rapper Nas and songwriter John Legend.

This arrives soon after English singer John Lennon’s son Julian announced Tuesday, the selling of a collection of Beatles memorabilia on the YellowHeart marketplace on Feb 7.
