Tennis sensation Emma Raducanu spotted in Singapore after Australian Open debut
SINGAPORE — British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu, who stunned the world when she won last year's US Open as an unheralded qualifier, was spotted at Singapore's Tanglin Club on Tuesday (25 January) putting in a training session with local players.
The 19-year-old, who became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era as well as the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles competition since 1977, was in town following her exit from her debut at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
She was beaten by Montenegro's Danka Kovinic in the second round last Thursday, after battling on with a blistered hand. In the first round, she defeated 2017 US Open champion Sloan Stephens in three sets.
With the next tournaments on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour to be held in Dubai and Doha next month, Raducanu took the opportunity for a stopover in Singapore, and is reportedly staying for at least a week.
Raducanu catapulted into stardom following her astonishing triumph in New York, and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, the first women's tennis player to earn the honour since Virginia Wade in 1977. She was also named WTA Newcomer of the Year for winning a Grand Slam title on just her second attempt.
When contacted by Yahoo News Singapore, Tanglin Club declined to comment.
