Fans of SBC dramas would definitely be familiar with Zheng Wanling, 56.

The actress, who starred in classic '80s dramas such as 1988's On The Fringe and 1998's Driven by a Car, for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the Star Awards, famously retired from showbiz in the late ‘90s when she left Singapore after marrying a Panamanian diplomat.

She would live in Panama for a decade and South Africa for 11 years before moving back to Singapore with their now 22-year-old daughter in 2018.

8world recently ran a story questioning Wanling's marital status as the actress had used terms such as "my daughter's father" to refer to her husband.

However, during her interview with 8days.sg, in which she spoke entirely in English, Wanling said that her "spouse" had visited her in Singapore recently, and that he is unable to live here permanently due to work commitments in South Africa.

Over the years, Wanling has returned sporadically for work and her most recent acting project is Mediacorp drama Home Again, in which she plays the mother of Desmond Tan, Ya Hui and Edwin Goh.

Her character grapples with the guilt of losing her oldest son (Desmond) when he was eight and his subsequent return, as well as her prickly relationship with her daughter (Yahui) because of the latter's choice in men.

Wanling said the role required “a lot of emotional depth” and that she had encountered difficulties with her lines because her “Chinese is rusty after not using it for so long”.

“And so I'm very thankful to the cast and crew for being so patient with me,” she said.
