Tooth extraction: Dentist on TikTok shares tips to good dental health

If you're suffering from tooth decay, teeth crowding or infection, dentists would normally suggest a tooth extraction to minimise further pain or discomfort.

The tooth extraction process is generally a quick, outpatient treatment that requires either local, general or intravenous anaesthesia.

Normally, it takes a few days to recover after a tooth extraction that involves a wisdom tooth. During that time (or anytime, really), it is wise to practise good hygiene care so that your gums heal properly and your recovery goes smoothly.

To help you speed up your recovery process, Malaysian-based dentist Dr Bon answers your burning questions in 15 seconds about caring for your gums after a tooth extraction process.

When it comes to rinsing after a tooth extraction process, she says "no" in the video. But, you can brush your teeth after the extraction, just taking note to "avoid the extraction area."

She advises against eating hard and hot food, and only recommends soft food. Dr Bon also gives a thumbs-up to ice-cream, so that's a win for us!

Dr Bon also clarified that we shouldn't smoke after an extraction (inserting a little health advisory along the way). The most important to watch out for is that if we still experience bleeding, we should head straight to an emergency centre.
