Celebs Share Messages Of Support For Singapore’s Olympians

Messages of support and love for the athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics this year have poured in from our celebs following yesterday’s events .

On Thursday (July 29) evening, national swimmers Joseph Schooling, 26, and Quah Zheng Wen, 24, took part in the heats for the 100m butterfly race. Joseph is the defending champion for the race, having won the gold medal and set an Olympic record in Rio 2016. However, both Joseph and Zheng Wen failed to qualify for the semi-finals, clocking in at 53.12 seconds and 52.39 seconds respectively.

An hour later, national paddler Yu Mengyu faced off against Japan’s Mima Ito for a bronze medal in the table tennis women’s singles. Unfortunately, she eventually lost 4-1 to Mima, who's ranked second in the world.

Mengyu updated her Instagram a few hours after her game with a heartfelt post thanking everyone for their support.

Mengyu and her fellow Singapore paddlers will face France on August 2 in the women’s team event.

National hero and the first Singaporean to win an Olympic gold medal Joseph Schooling also thanked everyone for their support in a touching IG post earlier today (July 30).

“Hey guys! Thanks for all the wishes and support — it means the world to me. I’ll take some time to process everything and get back to you as soon as I can. Much love from Tokyo. Majulah Singapura” he wrote.​​​​​​​

“We are rooting for you no matter what!” commented Belinda Lee on Joseph's post, while Dennis Chew added: “We still LOVE you”.

Other celebs also chimed in to show their support for Team Singapore.

987FM DJ Sonia Chew dedicated a post to the athletes, calling on Singaporeans to show their “unwavering support and love” to them, for “having the courage and strength to dedicate their lives to the sport and representing our country”.

“To our Singaporean athletes: you are our pride and joy, and I'm always rooting for each and every one of you” she wrote.​​​​​​​

Similarly, King Kong Media Production artiste Chiou Huey called for netizens to be kinder in a post on her Instagram Story.

“I’m sure he tried his best and he’s definitely the one who’s feeling the full brunt of everything already,” she wrote, referring to Joseph.

Class 95 DJ Jean Danker shared a throwback snap of her with Joseph as well, writing: “It's ok [Joseph], we are still so so very proud of you! (sic)”
