Japanese quick-service yakiniku chain Yakiniku Like opened its first Singapore outlet to long queues at PLQ last February. It could be because of its no GST, no service charge wallet-friendly menu (prices start from a reasonable $7.80 for the 100g pork-and-chicken set with rice, miso soup and kimchi), or its unique ‘solo dining’ concept.

For the uninitiated, the brand is famous for its individual electric smokeless grills nicknamed “hitori yakiniku” (or one-person barbecue, which doesn’t require communal sharing). The “fast food-style” restaurant also strives to deliver your order to you within three minutes. So no judgment if you show up at the restaurant alone for a quick meal.

  • 2 of 6 Two-hour waiting time

The average waiting time is around two hours at peak mealtimes at the no-reservations PLQ eatery. Customers can take a queue number and wander off, but you’ll have to come back before your number is announced on a screen or your table will be forfeited.

  • 3 of 6 Yakiniku Like is opening two more outlets

Given its immense popularity, we wonder why Yakiniku Like is not opening more outlets. But turns out, it’s setting up not one, but two new outlets at Clementi Mall and VivoCity. The upcoming branches — which are franchised — will welcome diners in June 2021.

But for now, you can dig into a new menu item at the PLQ outlet: a 120g Miyazaki Wagyu Ribeye Steak ($32.80 nett). The dish features a ribeye cut from Miyazaki (a Japanese prefecture which, along with Kobe, is known for producing the best wagyu cattle).

Wagyu from the region is graded, with A5 being the best, and A4 the second best. The quality grade cuts are known for their intense marbling, with fat that has a melting point at almost room temperature.

Interestingly, Miyazaki is the 15-year champion at a national wagyu competition known as the Olympics of Wagyu Beef . The beefy 'competitors' are judged for their meat colour and brightness, taste, firmness, texture and marbling/ fat distribution.

  • 5 of 6 Grill it yourself

The steak is served in thin slices for grilling. According to Yakiniku Like, you can expect a “perfect meat and fat balance” that “almost dissolves in your mouth upon impact, unleashing a gloriously rich and buttery flavour”. Whoa.

The beef is available from now till mid-May 2021. It also comes as a set ($34.80 nett) with rice, miso soup and your choice of kimchi or a salad, and as a takeaway-friendly Takeaway Bento ($34.80 nett).
