BEIRUT - Islamists and allied rebels in northwestern Syria on Monday killed at least 12 pro-regime fighters, thwarting their advance, a Britain-based war monitoring group said.

But the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance, headed by ex-leaders of Syria's former Al-Qaeda affiliate, and their allies reportedly thwarted the advance. The region they hold is home to some three million people, nearly half of whom have been displaced from other parts of the country.
