LAHORE - The water released by India into the Sutlej River, in sheer violation of the Indus Water Treaty, inundated 18 villages on both sides of the river bed in Kasur district, Dunya News reported on Tuesday.
According to rescue sources, up to 90% of the three most affected villages have been evacuated. The district administration has set up 17 relief camps to accommodate affected people. According to National Disaster Management Authority spokesperson, water level at Ganda Singh Wala has reached 18.70 feet. He said that presently 52,000 cusecs of water is passing through Ganda Singh Wala Headworks.
The spokesperson further informed that water level in River Sutlej is rising rapidly as 100,000 to 150,000 cusecs water from Indian side is expected to enter Ganda Singh Wala during next 12 hours. This flood water is expected to pass through Sulemanki Headworks on August 23 and reach Islam Headworks on August 25 and finally enter River Chenab in Panjnad on August 28.
Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster Management Authority has completed all preventive measures with the help of local administration, Rescue 1122 and Pakistan Army personnel and asked the people of rural areas along the banks of Sutlej to move to safer places.
