Sen. Joel Villanueva maintained on Monday that the government should collect taxes from the Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO).

Villanueva disagreed with the Solicitor-General Jose Calida’s opinion that taxes cannot be imposed on offshore gaming operators since the Philippines’ tax code states that income is taxable only if derived from sources within the country.Villanueva however said POGOs, like any other foreign businesses operating in the country, should pay their taxes.

“If this is the argument that some POGOs are using to run away from taxes, their contention does not have a leg to stand on,” he added. Although it was revealed in a recent House hearing that the state tax assessor and collector cannot collect enough taxes from most of the POGOs in the Philippines due to the income tax rules of the National Internal Revenue Code.
