Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez, a trained oncologist and champion in the fight against tobacco, is diagnosed with lung cancer.

Citing a medical report, his office said Friday that"the presence of a malign tumor has been confirmed." Vazquez led his leftist Frente Amplio party to power in 2005 at the start of his first 5-year term in office. He wasUruguay in 2006 became the first Latin American country to ban smoking in public spaces, and only the fifth worldwide.
