Students and teachers from various campuses of the University of the Philippines (UP) walked out of their classes on Monday to protest against “campus militarization.”

University of the Philippines Student Regent Isaac Punzalan said UP should remain a ‘zone of peace’ and a ‘sanctuary’ for the oppressed and marginalized where ‘academic freedom thrives in the pursuit of genuine and social change for the welfare of the Filipino people’.The UP Diliman University Student Council also released a solidarity statement, encouraging students to ‘intensify’ their calls.

Gani Tapang, UPD College of Science Dean said the walk out was made because the students and teachers know the significance of clamoring for genuine change. “Naiintindihan natin ang kahalagahan ng paglaban at alam natin kung ano ang dapat para sa tunay na pagbabago ng ating lipunan,” said Tapang. UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan has pledged unity with the students and the UP community in defending the university. In UP Visayas IloIlo City, Ming-ao, and Tacloban classes were suspended to make way for the UP Day of Walkout and Action programs.

Senator Bato dela Rosa earlier suggested the deployment of police and military personnel to conduct ‘indoctrination’ to students in state universities and colleges to combat the alleged ‘brainwashing’ activities being done by progressive organizations.

Free tuition is waiving... Dati pa hanggang ngayon dko maintidihan ano pinaglalaban ng mga ito, kahit sino nakaupo ng pangulo...
