MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University wasted a golden opportunity to gain a measure of revenge on Sunday, when they bowed once more to University of the Philippines in their first game of the UAAP Season 82 tournament.
It turned out to be the last time they got on the board. The Fighting Maroons, fueled by the debuting Kobe Paras, pounced on Adamson's turnovers to trim the deficit. A pair of charities by Bright Akhuetie with 2 seconds left completed the comeback, and UP took an 83-82 victory. The mistakes came from the unlikeliest sources. Jerom Lastimosa and Jerrick Ahanmisi, usually the steadiest of veterans, committed the costly turnovers in the final two minutes that allowed UP to come back. Lastimosa also saw a potential game-winning triple blocked by Ricci Rivero at the buzzer.
Indeed, Adamson had been in control at the half, thanks to a stunning performance by Fil-Peruvian guard Val Chauca in the second quarter. He exploded for 15 points in the frame, singlehandedly outscoring UP which managed just 7 points.
