CEBU CITY — A retired judge and his wife were killed after they tried to save their grandson from their burning house in Mandaue City on Monday.

By Calvin CordovaCEBU CITY— A retired judge and his wife were killed after they tried to save their grandson from their burning house in Mandaue City on Monday.The remains of retired Municipal Trial Court Judge Gerardo Gestopa, 65, and his 67-year-old wife Louella were recovered from the debris of their burned house on Zamora Street in Barangay Centro, Mandaue.

The couple’s charred remains were recovered past 10 a.m. or at least eight hours after the fire broke out.Senior Fire Officer 1 Noel Codilla said the fire started around 2 a.m. and destroyed at least 15 houses and damaged five others.Centro Barangay Captain Ignacio Cortes said that according to some neighbors, the couple was able to get out of their house before it was razed but they rushed back to save their 20-year-old grandson, who was a special child.

Only the couple’s remains were recovered as of this writing.The cause of fire is still being investigated. Fire damage was estimated to cost P185,000.Three other residents, Besmark Lumapas, 38; Ruby Buhawi, 45; and Kate Ramirez, 8, were injured in the fire.

The fire was put out at 4:10 a.m.Maricel Yu, head of the City Social Welfare Services, said the fire affected at least 45 families.Yu said fire victims will temporarily take shelter at the City Central Elementary School and will be provided with packed meals in the next three days.
