For many decades, in its decaying state, the ground floor of what has been described by the National Museum of the Philippines as “the oldest, most imposing heritage houses in Ilocos Norte” was rented to vendors selling all manner of native food and delicacies.

On Dec. 23, 2015, after the municipal government acquired the dilapidated bahay na bato, Balay San Nicolas was declared an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines.
