NEW YORK— Two-time champion Naomi Osaka's U.S. Open title defense ended in tears on Friday, as she suffered a stunning defeat in the third round to Filipino-Canadian Leylah Fernandez 5-7 7-6 6-4, and told reporters she planned to take a break from the sport.
The third seed whacked her racquet and then flung it onto the court twice in frustration as Fernandez scored five straight points in the tiebreak, in a series of superb play."I'm really sorry about that," she said. "I was telling myself to be calm, but I feel like maybe there was a boiling point. Her troubles continued as 18-year-old Fernandez broke her serve to kick off the third set, and Osaka hit a ball into the stands in the second game, prompting a warning from the chair umpire.
A fan favorite, Osaka has struggled with uneven play since she withdrew from Roland Garros earlier this year amid a public row with tournament officials over required media appearances, which she said had a negative impact on her mental health.
Ecuadorian-Canadian/Filipino🤷♂️
Congratulations! God Bless you🇵🇭🇦🇱 Cheers🥂👏🌺
I like her positivity! Youth inspiring!
It’s not the ancestry that brought victory but the training
Hi 👋 Let's support each other ❤️
Watched the game and never occurred to me she was Filipino. Even the commentators never mentioned she was Filipino. Better for us to focus on Alex Eala than a player not really our own.
Fil-Canadian my ass. Hilig nyo maki limelight, focus on pure pinoy and grassroots program.
Her focus, looks like, is on something else...expected her not to win the title anyway...
ANCALERTS Nakikisawsaw na naman mga Pinoy. Magtigil. Ecuadorian ang tatay, fil canadian ang nanay, born in montreal.
Wat to go, Leylah 🇵🇭
