Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas has asked Congress to strongly appeal to the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to heed the call of students, parents and teachers for health breaks and academic ease amid the unprecedented surge in COVID-19 cases.Vargas, chairman of the House Committee on Social Services, aired the proposal in a resolution filed on Thursday, Jan.

Vargas said that the pandemic “is as much a mental health issue as it is an issue of physical health.” The Lower House is expected to refer the proposal to the Committee on Basic Education and on Higher Education when regular session resumes next week. The lawmaker said that the recent public health situation, including the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant, has “further negatively affected the lives and well-being of millions of learners, students, parents, and teachers all around the country, and has led to some academic groups calling for an ‘academic health break’ or ‘academic ease.
