The Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources is more inclined to regulate the use of single-use plastics, instead of pushing for a total ban.

Senator Cynthia Villar disclosed this Tuesday after the committee conducted its first hearing on the bills regarding the use of single-use plastic products.“Hindi pa naman natin pinagbabawal ang single-use plastics ,” Villar told reporters.

“Para hahatiin natin ang trabaho . Kasi pag ‘di natin hinati ‘yong trabaho hindi natin talaga kaya . It’s enormous work,” she said during the hearing. Based on the DENR’s Enviromental Management Bureau, there are only 10,722 materials recovery facility serving 13,994 barangays out of the 42,045 barangay in the country.

Villar said this would be included in the Senate’s proposed bill on single-use plastics, making waste management a requirement before LGUs are given the Seal of Good Governance by the Department of Interior and Local Government.
